Jubilate "Street Party Fit for a Queen"

Sun 03/06/12 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Guildhall Winchester, The University of Winchester and Winchester BID have joined forces to present a truly community spirited weekend overflowing with entertainment, interactive workshops, food and drink and a double dose of affordable, old-fashioned FUN in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of her Majesty the Queen. Artists, musicians, magicians, comedians, actors and dancers of all ages and from all areas of the Winchester District will come together for 48 hours to give the community of Winchester an opportunity to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in style.

From midday, the Broadway will become a thriving hub of activity as members of the community join forces for a Street Party with a difference. Open to all and with no admission fee, attendants can bring along a picnic, purchase food and drink items from the various local businesses that will be joining us to promote all things local or simply come along and soak up the atmosphere. Visitors can join in with our performers' workshops, which will include street dance, circus performance, magicians and comedy, our “Crown making workshop” or join the many visual artists invited to capture the day from all angles and aspects and in all mediums.

The fun doesn’t stop there. We will have live performances at every twist and turn from dance to song, from comedy to astonishing magic, close up and personal at the tables. In the main performance area there will be a series of larger acts including choirs, musicians and dancers, brass bands and more. As the afternoon draws to a close the fun steps up a notch starting with the massive Winchester Rock Choir.

The afternoon will conclude with the entire party joining together for a rousing chorus of
national favourites, “Rule Britannia” , “Land of Hope Glory” and the National Anthem! In the true spirit of 2012 the events are collaborative and inclusive. The JUBILATE ethos is one we hope to keep working with, long after the party finishes. One of the ways the legacy will continue to blossom is through visual art exhibitions. Any of the artworks created at or inspired by JUBILATE events can be submitted for exhibition in the lower corridor of the Guildhall running from June – December 2012. The artists are also able to submit items to be entered into the city archive to ensure that, as in previous years, future generations will be able to see how “Being part of history in 2012” was so important.

Local press, radio and TV will be involved in the lead up to and during the events to ensure we can spread the message far and wide across the community. “The inspiration for these events came from a photograph in the city archive featuring Queen Victoria’s jubilee and we will be encouraging all local artists to come along and capture the day in all mediums” said Ian Folger - Guildhall Manager.

Winchester BID is proud to be working with the Guildhall and University on these events and ensuring Winchester is at the forefront of the Jubilee Celebrations in the local area and encouraging local residents to make the most of our beautiful city, said Catherine Turness, Winchester BID.

Performance slots are still available for the showcase and street party and we would like to hear from local visual artists to capture the events. For further information visit www.jubilatewinchester.co.uk
