Charles Dickens was a phenomenon in his own time, and has a strong claim to be the greatest novelist in the English language. To mark his bicentenary our best literary biographer has written a new and best-selling Life of Dickens, painting a vivid portrait of a man who was a political radical, a demonically hardworking journalist, the father of ten children, an actor and playwright, a newspaper editor, a supporter of liberal social causes, and the creator of characters who live immortally in our imagination: Mr Pickwick, Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Pip, David Copperfield, Mrs Gamp, Mr Micawber, Little Nell, Uriah Heep, Miss Havisham and many more.

Claire Tomalin concludes her magnificent biography: “He was, and he continued to be, a national treasure, an institution, a part of what makes England England; and he continues to be read all over the world.” The event is followed by a book-signing.
