Featuring Michael Grade, Lindsey Hilsum, Peter Sissons and Martin Bell

The Best of British Festival opening event examines why and how British Broadcasting can justifiably claim to be the best in the world. Its structure and content have undergone many changes since John Reith became the first Director-General of the BBC in 1922. Its early monopoly was broken by the creation of the ITV Regional Network in the 1950s, of Channel Four in the 1980s, and the burgeoning of many satellite and terrestrial channels in recent years.

The panel of distinguished broadcasters will answer questions submitted by the public about the past, present and future of the most popular of all art-forms. They represent both the production and presenting arms: Michael Grade has held the top management and editorial positions at the BBC, ITV and Channel Four; Lindsey Hilsum is the International Editor of Channel Four News; Martin Bell has been a foreign correspondent for the BBC and Independent MP for Tatton 1997-2001; Peter Sissons was successively an ITN Correspondent, the first presenter of Channel 4 News, then one of the main presenters of the BBC Evening News.
