Art Exhibition: The Self, Reflected - Shades of Dreams and Timeless Shadows

Fri 25/05/12

An exhibition by artists from Central America.

This exhibition has been organised by the group ConceptSur and the arts collective ManifestaRte, and features the work of Axel Meza, Gustavo Bracamonte and Estuardo Maldonado. ManifestaRte is based in Guatemala in Central America, and its aim is to create, promote and show art. These artists specifically have exhibited their work in Guatemala, Central America and Latin America either individually or collectively.

The artists present an universal and a particular idea of the self, which is conceived privately, existentially and introspectively. Nevertheless, it has meaning beyond the individual; it is conceptually symbolic by constant construction and reaffirmation, by cultural signs and thoughts, by social behaviour and interaction with others. The symbols are seen consciously and unconsciously through many forms of expression, which sometimes come to us and exist as allegoric dreams, subjective visions and reflection of experiences.

Hence, birds flying, polimorphic creatures, shadows shades and colours, geometric and random lines and traces, represent desire beyond the possible. In this sense life is transformed, meaning something other than the way it may be perceived and the conceptual self imitates or mimics this idea to transcend from fear to hope, from impunity to justice. Without boundaries to define the self in a world that is reflecting and changing if only by the function of imagination, the mind invents creatures that depict an aspect of reality and relies on dreams that can appear to succumb to nightmare, to repeat the cycle. Something monstrous can appear before us and become a reflection of a thought, a feeling inside us, a memory floating, suspended as part of the imagination and the reality of the self.
