Sun 11/12/16 10:00 AM - 9:45 PM

This year’s Winter Winchester Speakers’ Festival, which takes place on Sundays 4th and 11th December 2016 at the Discovery Centre brings together a great line-up.
Speakers include: General Sir Richard Shirreff, who is the recently retired Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, tells us why he believes that there is real, imminent danger of war with Russia in the very near future. Tony Little, former Headmaster of Eton until the end of 2015, discusses his views on education and Dermot Turing, nephew of Alan Turing - the WW2 hero of Bletchley Park, gives the inside story of his life. Lord David Owen, founder of the SDP, shows us how close Britain came to seeking a negotiated peace with Nazi Germany and best-selling author Damien Lewis tells the story of the secret race to stop the Nazi bomb programme. Adrian Tinniswood also explains, on the basis of his best-selling book, what life was like in large English country houses and stately homes between the wars. Christina Lamb, the US Editor for the Sunday Times, tells the story of war-torn Syria through the story of a girl, Nujeen, who escaped on her wheelchair to the West and Marina Benjamin, a former arts editor of the New Statesman, gives insight into how to make the best of one’s middle years in the ‘Middlepause’. The internationally-known designer Mary Keen gives an understanding of the gardens at Lord Rothschild's private house, Eythrope and Anne Sebba, who was a foreign correspondent for Reuters, explains how the women of Paris lived, loved and died in the 1940s under Nazi Occupation. The former senior Foreign Correspondent for the Economist, John Andrews, talks about the state of conflict in the world and Dr Andrew Monaghan, who is Senior Research Fellow in Russian Politics at Chatham House explains the new politics of Russia. Finally, A T Williams, who won the Orwell prize, asks if justice was served at the Nuremberg Trials after WW2. It is the festival's most extensive programme yet!
