Face to Face with the Middle Ages - lecture

Tue 15/03/16 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

An Inaugural Lecture by Professor Patricia Skinner.
'Medieval' is all-too-often deployed in the modern media to signify the outmoded, or
primitive, or horrifically violent, and those that use it tend to do so secure in their own
belief that we've 'moved on'. This lecture challenges the implicit division between the
middle ages and the modern world, largely a creation of Renaissance scholars already
sure that they had reached the 'modern' age after a period of darkness. It explores the
history of violence, and in particular violence against the face, to demonstrate that
continuities across centuries are just as important to study as differences.
