What does the UK Parliament do?

The UK Parliament represents the people of the United Kingdom. It makes decisions and passes laws on a wide range of issues that affect you.

Who is eligible to vote?

To vote in a UK Parliament election a person must be registered to vote and also be one of the following:
•18 years of age or over on polling day
•a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland
•not be subject to any legal incapacity to vote

The following cannot vote in a UK Parliament election:
•members of the House of Lords
•EU citizens (other than UK, Republic of Ireland, Cyprus and Malta) resident in the UK
•anyone other than British, Irish and qualifying Commonwealth citizens
•convicted persons detained in pursuance of their sentences, excluding contempt of court (though remand prisoners, unconvicted prisoners and civil prisoners can vote if they are on the electoral register)
•anyone found guilty within the previous five years of corrupt or illegal practices in connection with an election

Important Dates

Deadline of nomination papers:  4pm on Thursday 11 May
Publication of statement of persons nominated 5pm on Thursday 11 May
Deadline of Registration Monday 22 May
Deadline to amend, delete or apply for a postal vote 5pm on Tuesday 23 May
Deadline for new proxy applications 5pm on Wednesday 31 May

If you are an eligible elector and you are already on the Register of Electors for Winchester, you do not need to re-register for these elections.

You can register to vote by clicking here. This takes about 5 minutes to complete. The deadline for applying to register for voting in this election is Monday 22 May 2017.

If you are unable to get to your polling station on 8 June, there are different options available to you in order for you to cast your vote at these elections:

1) By post - The deadline to apply vote by post is 5pm on Tuesday 23 May 2017 at 5:00pm. A copy of the application form for this can be downloaded on the bottom of this page. Please note that you will need to print this form and complete it as a signature is required in order to complete the form. We will write to you once this has been allowed.

2) By Proxy - the deadline to apply to vote by proxy at these elections is 5pm on Wednesday 31 May 2017 at 5:00pm. A copy of the application form for this can be downloaded at the bottom of this page. Please note that you will need to print this form and complete it as a signature is required in order to complete the form. We will write to you once this has been allowed.

Completed forms can either be posted back to the address shown on the form, or can be scanned in and emailed to us at ereg@winchester.gov.uk.
