Dementia Friendly Winchester

Dementia Friendly high street

Hope Church collecting their Dementia Friendly Sticker

Winchester becomes the first City in Hampshire to launch a Dementia Friendly highstreet

Organisations and businesses in the high street have signed up to the Hampshire Dementia Action Alliance and commit to making their staff 'dementia aware'.  This will enabe them to be more confident in helping customers who have dementia. In return the businesses have received a window sticker to display, showing people with dementia and their carers that the organisation is 'Dementia Friendly'.  It will give people reassurance that they will be able to use those services and shops knowing they will be met with understanding and support if needed.

Dementia Champions

Winchester City Council is working closely with its partners on the District Health and Wellbeing Board on a range of initiatives to help make the district more dementia friendly. Andover Mind has been commissioned to deliver one of the initiatives which aims to identify and train a team of volunteer ‘Dementia Champions’ who can then cascade dementia awareness sessions in their local communities. The project is closely linked to the national Alzheimer’s Society ‘Dementia Friends’ movement.

Winchester City Council has recently hosted a Dementia Champions Training day.  The training was delivered by the Alzheimer’s Society. As well as developing an understanding of dementia and the small things that can be done to make a difference to people living with the condition, the session equipped participants with the skills to deliver short dementia awareness sessions to others.

Ten Winchester City Council staff and 4 apprentices are amongst those that are now Dementia Champions.

Dementia Friends Awareness Sessions

A Dementia Friend is someone who learns to understand a little bit about what it is like to live with Dementia and then turns that knowledge into practical action. Every small action can help, from visiting someone living with Dementia to spreading the word about Dementia Friends.
Sessions are free and will be held at the Discovery Centre in Winchester.
