The Observatory - A Place to Look In, a Place to Look Out

The Observatory Lymington

2016 Civic Trust Awards Regional Finalist

Winchester City Council is delighted to hear that The Observatory is a regional finalist in the 2016 Civic Trust Awards.

The CivicTrust Awards is the longest standing architectural and built environment awards scheme in Europe which recognises the very best in architecture, urban design, planning, landscape, public realm and public art.

The Observatory is a unique and exciting sculptural and architectural structure and a work space for artists, which is directly accessible by the public. It offers artists the opportunity to engage closely with a specific place, providing space and shelter for investigation and to share with an audience. It is an inter-disciplinary project involving artists, architects and other professionals and students, providing creative learning opportunities throughout all phases for students and the general public.

The first residency for The Observatory in January 2015 was Morn Hill in Winchester. Other residencies have been in Lymington and Mottisfont.  The Observatory is currently sited at Bucklers Hard in the New Forest National Park where it will remain until June 2017.

Further locations for the two year programme will include venues in Devon and Cornwall.

On culmination of project there  will be a major conference in partnership with a UK University to share what has been learnt from the programme.

SPUD’s previous projects include Stephen Turner's Exbury Egg: The Exbury Egg has attracted genuinely global interest in the creation of a high quality and unique structure that has fascinated people from all over the world and has provided a place for artist Stephen Turner to live and work since June 2013. The Egg was featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces on Channel 4 TV in the UK.
