Bishop's Waltham Town Team
With a mix of funding from Central Government, Winchester City Council and Bishop’s Waltham Parish Council, the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team has been able to spearhead the recruitment of a Market Towns Development Officer. Appointed in May, Heidi Isa now works two days a week for our Town Team and one day a week for both Wickham and Denmead.
The results are already evident – the Independents' Day on July 4th, which promoted our local independent traders on the High Street, was a great success in bringing new footfall to the High Street.
More recently the Town Team organised "Pumpkins on Parade". This series of events saw 158 children submit pumpkin pictures which were displayed in 40 shops around the town centre. 40 winners were selected from the entries to come and carve a real pumpkin and these pumpkins were also displayed in shops before being paraded at the Hoe Road recreation ground fireworks display. During the week of half term children and their parents were drawn in to the Bishop's Waltham Town Centre to find their pictures and then encouraged to attend the Hoe Road Fireworks Display to watch the Pumpkin Parade. It was a great community event.
Bishop's Waltham Christmas Fayre
With Christmas approaching fast the Christmas Fayre preparation is underway. This event is organised by a few very committed people in Bishop's Waltham and the Town Team is merely assisting in its promotion. The main event is on Thursday 5th December from 6pm to 8pm. There will be activities taking place such as a nativity with live animals and a Santa's grotto- a perfect Christmas evening for the children. With free parking from 3pm, shops open 'til late and Christmas gift stalls it is a perfect opportunity to get your Christmas shopping done!
Local Food Festival
In the meantime, much else is afoot. An initial meeting has been held with food retailers and producers to consider a proper local Food Festival – either a Meon Valley Festival or one focused on Bishop’s Waltham. Either way, it will probably be part of the month-long Hampshire Food Festival organised by Hampshire Fare for July 2014. More details to follow...
Bishop's Waltham website
We are also working on developing a Bishop’s Waltham website and an over-arching Bishop’s Waltham brand. Both will be directed at attracting new visitors, new residents, our existing residents and others living in the nearby villages for whom Bishop’s Waltham is a local town hub. There is also a lot we can do to promote Bishop’s Waltham both as a shopping centre, a social hub for our residents and as a tourist attraction from our nearby towns and cities like Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth as well as those further afield, like Basingstoke and Guildford.
There’s a lot we hope to do to maintain the viability and vitality of the town centre. If you have skills and abilities that you’d like to volunteer, to help the Town Team, we’d very much welcome your contribution. Marketing expertise, design skills, project management, day-to-day contact with retailers/traders, community group liaison, are all areas where we’d welcome help. If you’d like to become involved in future-proofing our town centre, please contact Heidi Isa at HIsa@winchester.gov.uk . Otherwise, see you at the Christmas Fayre!
