Winchester High Street Refurbishment
Over recent years there has been a perception that the overall appearance of the High Street has declined and that it is not in keeping with the historic image of Winchester prompting Hampshire Councty Council and Winchester City Council to work together on a refurbishment scheme.
Hampshire County Council ensures that footways are safe by replacing damaged paving slabs on a routine basis, but the problem in Winchester was compounded by several factors including excavation work by utility companies, modern street cleaning methods, vehicle damage and materials no longer being obtainable.
The refurbishment of the High Street through the provision of new paving and street furniture will significantly improve conditions for pedestrians and provide the opportunity to review and replace all pedestrian signing in the central area.
The work will begin on 14th September 2009 in four phases, starting at the bottom of the High Street. New benches, sign posts and litter bins will be made and installed as paving work is completed. The work involves working with Southern Water to reline and replace the underground drainage pipe and then re-pave the High Street surface from
The High Street will remain open for business during the works, and access to all buildings will be maintained. Mildren will stop work completely for the seven week Christmas shopping period from November 17th until January 3rd.
