Street Name Plates
The City Council has the duty to name and sign streets. It has become increasing important as we travel further from our local area that we can find where we are and where we want to go quickly and efficiently.
New street nameplates are provided in a number of ways. The City Council has a small budget to replace damaged or illegible signs and to provide new signs for streets without street nameplates. New street nameplates are normally provided following a request. Please contact us giving location details. A typical new street nameplate can cost £200 to £250.
Developers are required to provide street nameplates for their new developments to the City Council standards.
There are many styles of street nameplate in use throughout the Winchester District. We are currently providing and replacing signs with three types, dependant on locality.
Recycled Style
Our standard style, used for over 90% of all new plates. It gets its name from the stand, which is manufactured from recycled plastic.

Conservation Style
Until recently only used within the City's conservation area, the plate style shown below is now used in some more rural village conservation areas.

Manufactured from cast aluminium, this style of plate has been used in Winchester for the past 100 years. The plates are normally maintained by painting, unless severely damaged.
Southwick Style
The Parish of Southwick is the only locality to have its own style of street nameplate. The traditional style of cream letters on a blue background, we believe, relates back to the Southwick Estate.

We would be very pleased to hear about any damaged or illegible street nameplates within the Winchester district. We also maintain a list for new signs, which are provided as funds permit.
