9. St Peter's Church, Soberton

St. Peter's Church, Soberton

Soberton SU 677 1821

The church was built towards the end of the 12th century, and was restored in 1880. The striking Perpendicular tower was created in the 16th century when the original was altered. Outside the south transept, there is a stone sarcophagus, probably of Roman origin, found locally. Inside there is a large wall monument (1736) at the east end of the north aisle and several 17th century Baroque wall monuments.

On the east wall of the south transept are the remains of some impressive wall paintings. The colour has disappeared but clear black outlines of parts of the design are still visible.
