12. St Peter's Church, Titchfield

The lower part of the west tower (originally a porch) contains some of the oldest Saxon work in Hampshire and
includes a course of red Roman bricks.
It is thought that this church may have been built under the influence of St Wilfrid who was carrying out missionary work in this area between 681-686.
The wrought iron gates in the fine Saxon west entrance date from 1651.
Impressive 16th century monuments to the first and second Earls of Southampton (Wriothesleys) can be found in the south chapel (see right) Thomas Wriothesley was Lord Chancellor of England to Henry VIII.
