Bikeabout Scheme

Couple taking advantage of the Bikeabout Scheme

Bikeabout
bicycles are available to anyone over the age of 18 to borrow for free. An annual registration fee of £20 is payable to Winchester City Council (WCC) or Winchester Area Community Action (WACA) for an individual membership and £35 for a joint membership for two individuals.

When an individual joins Bikeabout, he or she receives a free cycle helmet and a high visibility/reflective jacket. At present a free Winchester cycle map is also provided, to keep. Interested people can become members and loan bikes from Winchester City Council's Tourist Information Centre in the High Street or from the WACA Shopmobility office in The Brooks Centre.

WACA hold 17 bikes and the Tourist Information Centre hold 8 bikes. Both offices provide a booking and administration centre but the WACA office is only open on weekdays.

The Bikeabout scheme was initially funded through the MIRACLES project and jointly run by Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council. Its objective was to reduce air pollution and transport congestion, and also provide cleaner and better public transport. Bikeabout, which helps to deliver these objectives, aims to encourage the use of cycling as a means of transport within Winchester.

The Bikeabout scheme is now run jointly by Winchester City Council (WCC) and Winchester Area Community Action (WACA).
