GP Referral Schemes
A GP Referral scheme allows doctors and other health professionals to refer people who would benefit from an increased exposure to physical activity. Once referred by a local GP, each patient has an initial assessment with a qualified GP Referral Instructor, where they obtain more information about how the scheme can help provide benefits to them. They can then choose from a range of activities to take part in on a regular basis, for example the gym (with a personalised programme), exercise classes, swimming (where available) or Health Walks. The scheme lasts for 16 weeks, after which the participant is offered reduced price membership to the Leisure Centre so that they can continue with their regular exercise. Not everyone can be referred to the scheme; GPs have a strict set of criteria to adhere to, so if you are interested please talk to your local GP first. It is primarily designed and targeted for those who are inactive and have a condition that would benefit from an increase in moderate physical activity and/or sport i.e. High Blood Pressure/Cholesterol, Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and Depression/Anxiety/Stress.
