About the Historic Environment Centre
The historic environment centre (HEC), located above the tourist information centre in the Guildhall, is a search room where visitors can meet staff and enquire after a range of services:
- Information and records relating to the museums service collections including:
- Archaeology
- Local History
- Photographs
- Topographical art
- Coins and tokens
- Ethnography collection
- Identification of archaeological and local history material from the district by our curators and the Hampshire Finds Liaison Officer
- Centre for reporting potential Treasure finds from Hampshire
- Consult the Historic Environment Record - a database and associated information of all known historic sites and monuments across the district Access to a small selection of other resources such as a reference library, Victorian OS maps of the city and information relating to the history of the district
- A small educational loans service - boxes of artefacts which can be borrowed by schools and colleges
It replaces the former resources centre based at Hyde, and brings the services formerly provided there into the centre of town for greater convenience.
