Educational Visits and Information

Winchester Museums' sites offer hands-on and fun learning opportunities for schools. They are ideal venues for learning outside the classroom. There is support for teachers on pre-visits and planning self-led pre-booked visits and the possibility of hands-on artefact sessions with the education officer. School loans and online resources are available.

If you would be interested in discussing these opportunities further, please contact Robin Iles, Education Officer, via telephone: 01962 848 115 or email riles@winchester.gov.uk

Sessions

Romans KS2
At the City Museum see mosaics, jewellery and coins. Try replica costumes and hands-on activities. Handle and investigate a real Roman pot.

Anglo-Saxons KS2
At the City Museum see amazing artefacts, City models, numerous activities and replica costumes. Saxon pot handling. For Anglo-Saxons also visit Winchester Cathedral.

Old Winchester shops KS1
Reconstructed Victorian/Edwardian shops in the City Museum are great for looking at shopping in the old days. Period costumes help bring history alive.

Local history and geography KS2
The City Museum and Westgate are good for local studies of Winchester. Models show the town changing through time and its geographical setting. Objects show life in the town through the ages.

Westgate topics
The old fortified medieval gate is fun to explore with replica armour, activities and brass rubbing. It has hosted visits for Tudors, and Castles, and is ideally placed for visiting the Great Hall and Round Table.

City Space in Winchester Discovery Centre
Hosts changing temporary displays featuring art exhibitions and object based history displays. Keep up to date at City Space

Foreign Schools and language groups
Our museums welcome visits by foreign schools. Museum sites offer a hands-on child-friendly overview of Winchester's history. Groups are requested to pre-book.

Artefact Loans Service
A small loans service includes boxes of artefacts and teacher's notes on Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Medieval Times, Fossils, and more.

Online resources
Visit the Museum Online media webpage for animations on Ancient Egypt, Romans and Victorians and Out of Egypt archive exhibition.

Events
A wide range of museum events relate to curriculum areas, e.g. visits by Roman and Viking re-enactors, and art and craft workshops. See Preview for more information.
