About City Space
A trip to the Winchester Discovery Centre provides an opportunity to share in the history and culture of England's ancient capital. A specially-designed exhibition area on the ground floor featuring a changing programme of exhibitions, ranging from displays drawn from the vast collections held by Winchester City Council's museums service to installations by some of our talented local artists.
Every exhibition is brought to life by a range of talks, workshops and other activities such as object-handling sessions, with opportunities to explore new hobbies and interests or simply to lose yourself in another era.
With a special emphasis on families during the school holidays, the programme includes opportunities for everyone to participate, and to celebrate the special quality of the city and its surrounding towns and countryside.

Art and Artefacts: art by Alan Cracknell, artefacts from the Portable Antiquities Scheme
Saturday 3 May - Sunday 1 June
Alan produces detailed, intricate, intensely coloured paintings inspired by his interest in the natural world, history and archaeology. Reminiscent of Medieval manuscript illumination, they often incorporate text, names of ancient lanes or fields, or precious objects excavated from the earth.
Also on display will be his detailed drawings of finds brought into the museum by members of the public for identification and recording under the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Many of the finest objects discovered in Hampshire in recent years, several never exhibited in public before, will be on display alongside the paintings and drawings, providing visitors with a unique insight into how an artist working today is influenced by artefacts from the past.
