Conservation Introduction

An Introduction to Conservation

The district contains approximately 3,000 listed buildings and 37 conservation areas.

The section advises the Council on applications for Listed Building Consent and planning applications affecting listed buildings, conservation areas, registered historic parks and gardens and in some cases, scheduled monuments. Pre-application advice on proposals can usually be given if requested by historic building owners or their agents. A series of Conservation Guidance Notes are available and contained within this website.

The Council compiles a 'Buildings at Risk' register defining historic buildings which are considered at risk from neglect and decay. The Council is devising a strategy to tackle such problem buildings and safeguard their future.

Winchester Conservation Area Project
The Winchester Conservation Area Project was launched in June 2000 with Winchester City Council commissioning Urban Initiatives and Alan Baxter Associates to undertake the study
