Arts - Introduction

Theatre Royal

What do we mean by the arts?
By the arts we mean performance, drama, dance, music, film, painting, photography, street theatre, design, digital media, sculpture, architecture, weaving, writing, storytelling, singing - and more. From music to fashion clothing, and from our favourite tv soap to the bathroom wallpaper, we are surrounded by the amazing creative energy which makes human beings unique. Why does Winchester City Council care about the arts?

Shiver PosterWhy does Winchester City Council care about the arts?
We recognise the value the arts have in themselves, and also the contribution which the arts make to people's lives and to the 'character' of the place where we live. Creative activity improves people's health and sense of well-being, developing self confidence in people as well as in communities. New ideas are born and explained, and problems solved through creative activity; new skills are gained, creating a life long interest or career. The arts also make good financial sense; recent research shows that for every pound spent on artistic activity, a further £8 is spent in the local economy, boosting employment and prosperity.

How does Winchester City Council support the arts?
We invest £300,000 each year in the local arts activity, in the services provided by Theatre Royal, Tower Arts Centre, Winchester Gallery, and festivals such as the Hat Fair, Mayfest, Bishop's Waltham and Denmead. We also provide grants for smaller projects and organisations. We run projects and galleries in locations such as the Winchester Discovery Centre, and create other exhibition opportunities in the District. We support projects for young people, such as Winnall Rock School and Winchester Rural Youth Theatres. Our Arts Development Officer supports and advises individual artists and organisations, building networks for the Creative Industries and leading on various projects.
