2012 - Live Your Dream

The Olympics and Beyond

Live Your Dream logo

2008 is the year of the Beijing Olympics, and billions of people around the world will be inspired by the talent and excitement of this global sporting spectacle. The end of the Beijing Games, however, marks the start of London's official role as incoming host city - and the beginning of four years of sporting and cultural opportunities for communities around the UK.

As your City Council, we are also preparing for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. We are keen to ensure that over the coming four years, our residents have every chance to participate in and enjoy the build up to London 2012. In the Winchester District, we would like to encourage you to Live Your Dream for 2012 - and we would like to help make that happen. Read our Framework for 2012 document attached below to find out more.

What's Your Dream
We want Winchester to make the most of London 2012. There are already some inspiring local projects underway including the opening of the £3.5million sports stadium in Bar End. What do you want to achieve in the district over the coming four years? What else should we be doing?

The Council's draft 'Making the Most of 2012 - The Framework' seeks to ensure that residents from the Winchester District make the most of the opportunities and interests of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and Cultural Olympiad.

The framework can be found at the bottom of the page and we would be interested to hear your views about the document by the end of September by completing our short survey.

The History of the Olympics in England
Did you know that London is the only city to have hosted the modern Olympics three times? Winchester resident Dr Martin Polley is a sports historian at The University of Southampton and is currently writing a book for English Heritage on the Olympics. Follow the link below to listen to the first in a new series of 2012 podcasts, in which Dr Polley a colourful tour of the Country's 'Olympic' heritage.
