Oliver's Battery Community Heritage Project

Oliver's Battery

The project aimed to help and involve members of the local community to find out about their past, by examining and recording a wide range of information about the archaeology and history of the parish. They are trying to answer a number of questions:

• Who were the first inhabitants of the area ?
• Why was the enclosure at Oliver's Battery built ?
• Who was the Oliver's Battery warrior ?
• What was the area like in the Middle Ages?
• When did the name "Oliver's Battery" first appear?
• Why and when did the modern settlement of Oliver's Battery become established?

Investigations into the origins and development of the parish are taking place in two main areas. One group of residents is researching the documentary, pictorial, map and photographic evidence of the area. The other group is looking at the archaeological evidence.
