What is the Council doing?

Sustainability is important to Winchester City Council and the Council acknowledges its own role in helping to create a more sustainable Winchester.

The priorities of the Corporate Strategy are working towards Economic, Social and Environmental improvement - the three 'pillars' of sustainability. The Council has also worked with partners to develop the Community Strategy for the Winchester district. This addresses the needs and concerns of the community and is working towards the goal of sustainability.

Winchester City Council's commitment to environmental aims is laid down in its Charter for the Environment. Work planned by the City Council and its partnerships for the district's environment is detailed in the Environment Strategy.

The important issue of Climate Change is being addressed through work on a Climate Change Plan for the Winchester District.

Internally, the Council is taking steps to reduce its own sustainability impacts. It has recycling systems set up for mixed paper and card, drinks cans, plastic bottles, printer cartridges, and vending machine cups. It is working on managing its energy use, through the Carbon Management Programme and has a travel plan to reduce the impacts from staff travel to work. The Council has developed a Sustainability Strategy to ensure that sustainability is integrated into the way the Council performs.
