Jargon Buster
Here are explanations and definitions of some of the terms and phrases used in sustainability:
Agenda 21
A programme for the 21st century for working towards sustainable development - signed by the UK and over 150 other nations at the Rio 'Earth Summit' in 1992
Biodiversity
The range of different species and habitats that produce a rich and healthy natural environment
Community
People living or working in the district. This includes individuals and organisations with an interest in the district
Credit Union
A financial co-operative that is owned and controlled by its individual members. It provides them with accessible savings, low cost loans and other financial services
Distinctiveness
The character of an area, created by a combination of the physical features, culture, nature, activity and identity of the place
Earth Summit
A United Nations meeting of heads of government which took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and which reached a series of agreements on how to protect the global environment
LETS (Local Exchange Trading Schemes)
These schemes enable members to exchange their skills and services with each other, by using a barter system instead of money
Local Agenda 21
A process to bring Agenda 21 down to the local level, including community actions that contribute to sustainability
Project Integra
This project involves all the Hampshire local authorities in a joint promotion of waste and recycling initiatives
Scrapstore
A centre set up to collect surplus and waste materials from businesses, which can then be used by local groups. This helps to ease the pressure on landfill sites and reduces the usage of raw materials
Sustainable Development / Sustainability
Creating a system of human activity that enhances and maintains quality of life now and for future generations
Well-being
The state of being satisfied, fulfilled and happy
