| People's Lottery
Millions up for grabs for ITV Meridan Communities |
|
The People’s Millions 2010 competition
has opened its doors for projects in ITV Meridian to put in their
bids to receive up to £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).
Five bumper Big Lottery Fund grants are on
offer, with a total of £250,000 to be awarded to community projects
in the region.
The People’s Millions, a partnership
between the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and ITV, aims to improve
communities across the UK and gives the public the chance to vote on
which local projects should receive lottery good-cause
funding.
Shortlisted projects will be showcased
on local ITV evening news where they will have to convince the
public why they need the cash. It will then be up to the public to
vote for groups to win the funding.
More information and entry forms are
available at www.peoplesmillions.org.uk. Entries need to be returned to the Big Lottery Fund by
12 noon on Friday 14 May
2010. |
| Your chance to walk
with Sir Ian Botham |
|
Mottisfont Abbey near Romsey, 14 April 2010
To celebrate 25 years of walking for charity, and to
continue raising money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma research, Sir Ian
‘Beefy’ Botham will be walking through 10 towns in 10 days
during April.
On 14 April, Beefy will be walking through
Winchester, and he’s inviting everyone to sign-up and join him at
Mottisfont Abbey near Romsey to help raise as much money as
possible.
He will be starting his walk outside Marks &
Spencer in Winchester High Street. From there, he will head up to
Mottisfont Abbey where the public is invited to join him for a
four-mile charity walk along the disused railway line.
You can sign-up for the walk at www.beefy25.com
or by calling 020 7685 5143. |
| Get paid for
generating your own energy |
|
From April, Households and communities
who install generating technologies such as small wind turbines and
solar panels will entitled to claim payments for the low carbon
electricity they produce.
The tariff, which is available
from April 2010, will be administered by Ofgem and energy suppliers
will be responsible for paying the reward to their customers.
Communities who install low carbon electricity
technology such as solar PV panels and wind turbines up to 5
megawatts, will be paid for the electricity they generate even if
they use it themselves. The level of payment depends on the
technology and is linked to inflation. A further payment would
be made for any electricity they feed into the grid. These payments
will be in addition to benefiting from reduced energy
bills.
More information about this
scheme can be found at the Energy Saving Trust

| Young people in
Swanmore plan for the future |
|
Young people in Swanmore will have the opportunity to help shape
the future of their community thanks to a pilot initiative to
improve young people's involvement in community planning.
Over the past few months, a group of local residents in Swanmore
has been working on a Village Plan with support from the Parish
Council. A draft community profile has been produced and the next
stage is to undertake a detailed consultation with residents. As
part of this consultation, young people will be given the chance to
have their say and help shape the future of the area.
The City Council, together with Community Action Hampshire, have
been working with Swanmore College to identify the issues that
matter to young people. If successful, this pilot scheme could act
as a template for a national drive to involve young people more in
the community planning process.
To find out more about this initiative, the Swanmore Village
Plan, or community planning in general, please contact Steve
Lincoln, the Council's Community Planning Manager, on 01962 848110

| Eat Out Get About -
guide to rural pubs released |
|
The Hampshire Tourism Partnership has
launched a new publication this month designed to encourage families
to eat out and get about now that the spring is on its way. The
Partnership, part of the regional tourism agency Tourism South East,
has produced a guide to family-friendly pubs in rural Hampshire
picking out the pubs across the county which offer a real welcome
for parents and children of all ages.
Divided into three sections, the guide helps
you to find the perfect pub for lunch out in the countryside, by the
sea or in the New Forest. Each pub has been visited to ensure
that it offers basic facilities such as baby changing, a children’s
menu, easy parking and access for pushchairs.
The new booklet will be available FREE from
libraries and tourist information centres from the end of March, and
the information can also be found on the website www.eatoutgetabout.co.uk The website will grow over the months to include
new suggestions, and some seasonal alternatives such as picnic ideas
with fresh ingredients from local farmers’
markets. |
| Over 55s Forum -
giving older residents a voice |
|
On 25 February, residents from across
the District attended a health and wellbeing event held by
Winchester’s Over 55’s Forum at Winchester Discovery Centre.
The Over 55’s Forum, which is chaired by local resident John
Hurcom and supported by Winchester City Council, aims to provide a
voice for older people across the Winchester District. It is made up
of volunteer members from neighbourhoods and communities across the
whole of the District.
The event opened with a presentation by Mr Hurcom, who outlined
the goals of the Over 55’s Forum. This was followed by a
presentation called Rust-Proofing the Body by Dr. Derek Browne of
the New Forest. There were also discussions about transport options
and the role of the Forum in representing older people within the
District. The event was a great success and it is hoped that it has
inspired more people to join the forum.
If you’d like to get involved with the Over 55’s Forum or just
want to find out more, please call 01962 848

| Youth of Winchester
Quiz Night a big success! |
|
Teams comprised of local students, Councillors, prospective MPs,
and City Council Officers went head-to-head against each other at
the recent Youth of Winchester Quiz Night at the Guildhall.
More than 60 young people from secondary schools across
Winchester took part in the event which was aimed at helping
young people to engage more with local democracy by spending time
with those who help to influence and make decisions for the
District. Teams competed by attempting rounds of questions designed
to test both general knowledge and knowledge of the Winchester
District. Despite a tightly fought contest, the quiz was eventually
won by a team comprised of students from Swanmore Secondary School
and Winchester City Council’s Chief Executive, Simon Eden.
Youth of Winchester is the District Youth Council which meets
once a month to give a voice to issues effecting young people. It
aims to get more young people involved with local democracy and to
help improve the image of young people across the District.
If you would like to find out more about the Youth of Winchester,
please contact SarahKate Abercrombie, Community Wellbeing Officer at
