Purple Flag for a 'better night out' in
Winchester
Just as a Blue Flag is an
indicator of a good beach, a Purple Flag is an indicator of where to go for a
good night out. The national scheme recognises that a town or city is
managing its night time experience and overcoming any negative public
perceptions that may exist. Winchester has achieved this status as it
offers a first class night out for both residents and the city's four
million visitors a year.

Winchester City Council is proud to announce that Winchester and the village of Kings Worthy are both on the Olympic Torch Relay route, offering local people the chance to witness the Olympic Flame on its journey across the country. The Torch will be travelling through Hampshire's County Town of Winchester and Kings Worthy on Wednesday 11 July 2012. Residents from across the district and surrounding areas are invited to come and welcome the Olympic Flame, share in the excitement of the Relay and celebrate the achievements of the local torchbearers. Winchester and Kings Worthy are two of over 1,000 villages, towns and cities announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic Flame will be carried by Torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay which is presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in the South East to devise the route. Local businesses can also take advantage of the additional opportunities created by the London 2012 Games. CompeteFor is a free service that enables businesses to compete for contract opportunities linked to the games and other major public and private sector buying organisations, such as Transport for London (TfL), Crossrail and the Metropolitan Police. With a particular focus on supply chain opportunities, CompeteFor acts as a brokerage service, matching
buyers with potential suppliers. It also facilitates access to focused
business support, through the national Business Link network, helping to
boost the long-term competitiveness of your business. To find out more

Winchester City Council and Tourism South East, the regional tourism body, have released the latest figures relating to tourism performance and investment – the picture is reassuringly healthy. Over the last three years the Winchester District’s performance in various key areas has shown steady growth – and 2010 statistics for some criteria buck the national trend of decline and/or static performance. What’s more, a new ‘Destination Management Partnership’ entitled ‘Visit Winchester and the Heart of Hampshire’ has attracted more private sector investment in tourism locally than ever before, further securing the industry’s future. The Economic Impact Survey, conducted annually by
Tourism South East, measures the number of day trippers and overnight
visitors, what these visitors spend, and the value of tourism within the
local economy. Last year’s figures indicate a sustained period of growth
with 32,000 more visitors opting to stay in the district overnight in 2010
compared to 2008, which was a key aim for the District’s tourism
officials. The strongest improvement in performance has been the hotel
sector, with an estimated 25,000 extra overnight stays by visitors from
within the UK. The Best of British Festival is a new idea from the Visit Winchester and the Heart of Hampshire Destination Management Partnership designed to raise the profile of Winchester in 2012. The patron for this event is Dame Judi Dench and it is being directed by John Miller. We would like to hear what events and offers you are keen to promote between 25 May and 26 July 2012 as we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Any event you are holding that you believe sums up something that can sit well under the title ‘Best of British’ will be considered. To make the most of this free
opportunity for promotion on www.bestofbritishfestival.com email Winchester City Council’s Head of
Tourism, Ellen Simpson, at esimpson@winchester.gov.uk or call 01962
848 219 if you would like to chat through your
ideas. The Council has adopted a
'commissioning approach' which puts our customers first. We commission in
different ways to make positive changes for the Winchester community, and
opportunities can take the form of one-off contracts, annual grants or
partnership agreements. When we commission goods or services we look for
innovation, value for money and a genuine understanding of the needs of
the Winchester District. Find out more about this approach on our Commissioning page. Consequently, we would like to invite you to a short breakfast session to hear about how we have spent your money for the benefit of the local economy, and for you to offer your ideas for future priorities.
