Alcohol Exclusion Zone
Street Drinking and associated behaviour creates concerns for safety, public health and the level of crime in the city. The knock on effect on the perceived image of the city held by residents or visitors may be detrimental to both the prosperity and social cohesion of the community.
An Alcohol Exclusion Zone (AEZ) was introduced in July 2005 and was designed to address these concerns. It was initially limited to the city centre but was suspected of displacing street drinkers to other areas of the city.
Since then an extended AEZ was introduced covering a greater area of the City Centre. This order came into force on 28 June 2007.
UPDATE
A review of the City wide AEZ will take place during the Autumn of 2008 and the results published on this site.
