Smokefree 2007

As of 1st of July 2007 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England became smokefree. A smokefree England will ensure a healthier environment, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from secondhand smoke.

New smoke free legislation in England will cover virtually all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces, including shops, offices, factories, pubs, restaurants, public transport, and work vehicles that are used by more than one person. Indoor workplace smoking rooms will also disappear so anyone wishing to smoke will have to go outside instead.

The main purpose of the legislation is to protect employees and the public from the effects of secondhand smoke. 85% of cigarette smoke is invisible - even when you think you're avoiding it, you're not. Second hand tobacco smoke is toxic and contains a dangerous cocktail of over 4,000 chemicals, including 69 cancer-causing chemicals.

Winchester City Council and the local NHS Trusts are providing support and advice for all business in complying with the new legislation.
