The Business of Partnership Working: City Bridge Case Study
Introduction
As one of the main entrances to Winchester city centre, Bridge Street and Chesil Street, known as the City Bridge area, is an important area for business. It provides entertainment, eateries and exciting shopping in a vibrant and historic environment. Partnership working has been one of the main factors of success for businesses in the area. This case study details how this was achieved, and the vast range of initiatives that have helped local businesses do better, despite a global recession.
Background
The City Bridge businesses are now greater than the sum of their parts. There had always been neighbourly activity, with businesses working on promotions together, but in recent years that partnership working has flourished. The businesses shared issues such as a concern for their environment, a wish for greater footfall in the area, and recognition as part of Winchester's shopping and entertainment offer.
Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) was voted in by city centre rate payers in July 2007, which gave the City Bridge traders a real opportunity. There was a new organisation which would listen to their needs, help bring them together, and have money to spend on projects the local business community wanted to see happen. They also became more engaged with Winchester City Council's tourism marketing team, and joined in wider campaigns to better promote the area.
