Fridge and Freezer Recycling
In Winchester old fridges and freezers can be disposed, free of charge at one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres or they can be collected as bulky waste by contacting Serco. A fee will be charged for collection.
On 1 January 2002, new European Union regulations came into affect changing the way in which fridges and freezers can be disposed of. The regulations state that the insulation foam has to be removed from the fridges to prevent the release of chemicals known as Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).
To check if your fridge or freezer contains these ODS, look on the 'appliance rating plate' - a metal plate or sticky label which is found on the back of the appliance. The plate contains information about the appliance, for example the model and serial number, and in most cases will also state what refrigerant was used in the appliance. Fridges that are marked with R12 or R134a on the plate will most probably have CFC or HCFC in the insulation foam.
Electrical retailers used to take away old fridges and freezers when you purchased a new one. However due to the change in regulations most no longer offer this service. In some areas, local traders or charities may accept appliances if they are in good working order. Remember that fly-tipping is illegal and dumped refrigerators and freezers can pose a real hazard to small children or animals who may become harmed or trapped inside.
