Sustainability
Sustainable development is most often defined as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Therefore as climate change will have a direct effect on future generations the battle to combat it has brought sustainable issues to the fore.
The Government believes that climate change is one of the gravest threats we face, and that urgent action is required. A substantial and cost effective reduction in carbon emissions from buildings is an essential part of the fight to combat this threat.
The building regulations have an important part to play in protecting and enhancing the environment and improving our quality of life.
They set standards for homes and non-domestic buildings in areas such as energy and water, covering new buildings and some work on existing buildings; they have a direct impact on carbon emissions and therefore climate change.
There will be incremental changes to the building regulations to improve the sustainability of buildings in 2013, 2016 and 2019. Please use the links below to find further information.
