Small Grants Scheme
The application deadlines for the Small Grant scheme in 2010/11 are:
- 3 March 2010 (for activities taking place after 14 April 2010)
- 2 June 2010 (for activities taking place after 14 July 2010)
- 6 October 2010 (for activities taking place after 17 November 2010)
1. Biodiversity Projects - the types of projects that are likely to be funded through this scheme are:
- Hedge or tree planting scheme to provide habitat for birds or mammals
- Pond restoration works including wild flower planting
- Restoration of historic garden areas such as St Giles Hill
- Thinning out of woodland areas to restore habitat to former natural state
Applications for Biodiversity grants will only be accepted from the following groups/organisations:
- Parish or Town Councils
- Not-for-profit community groups.
These applications must be supported by endorsement from the parish/town council (or Winchester Town Forum in the case of communities within the town area).
2. Carbon Reduction Schemes - this scheme aims to:
- Promote/support Carbon reduction initiatives - including feasibility studies; promotion of carbon reduction within the community; and installation of renewable energy or energy efficiency measures.
- Support carbon reduction and/or recycling champions.
Applications for Carbon Reduction grants will only be accepted from one of the following:
- Parish or Town Councils
- Not-for-profit community groups.
These applications must be supported by endorsement from the parish/town council (or Winchester Town Forum in the case of communities within the town area).
Examples of the types of projects that are likely to be funded through this scheme include:
- Installation of cavity wall or roof insulation in a community building
- Research into the feasibility of installing solar panels on a community building
- Cost of venue for group discussions on carbon reduction
3. Community Chest Scheme - this scheme is for one-off pieces of expenditure/projects/activities which fall with one of the following:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Safer and Stronger Communities
- Economic Prosperity
- High Quality Environment
- Inclusive Society
- Twinning Events
Your organisation needs to be a not-for-profit voluntary organisation, community group or a registered charity running activities or projects that benefit the residents of the Winchester District.
Priority will be given to projects which specifically:
(i) Include children and young people, the elderly, disabled groups, and miniority groups.
(ii) Address the needs of rural communities, and in particular Wickham and Knowle.
(iii) Target the town areas of Highcliffe, Stanmore, Winnall or Weeke.
(iv) Support the five legacy themes of Winchester's 2012 Framework "Live Your Dream". These projects - which are inspired by the 2012 Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and Cultural Olympiad - will have a lasting positive impact on the District, particularly for young or older people. The themes, all of which support the Council's corporate priorities below, are:
- through sport
- in your neighbourhood
- through the arts or local history
- by making the District a greener place
at work
Some of the groups and projects previously supported include:
- £500 was awarded to a new support group for sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
- A grant to Footsteps enabled a multi-cultural event to promote the different cultures that are represented in Winchester.
- A playgroup received £310 towards the cost of storage facilities.
- Funding enabled the launch of a wheelchair basketball club.
- Prime Theatre was awarded £500 to enable this theatre group to take entertainment into day centres and similar establishments for seniors in Winchester.
- Several twinning events were supported during the year, Wickham Twinning Association received a grant of £220 for an event involving Villers
Sur-Mer. and £120 was awarded to the Winchester Tourist Guides towards an exchange with Laon.
4. Community Planning - this funding stream is intended to support the process of community planning.
Examples include parish plans, neighbourhood plans and market town health checks. Examples of activities for which the funding may be used include:
- Hiring of venues for public meetings or focus groups
- Production of publicity material
- Printing of surveys or questionnaires
- Creative methods to engage with children, young people, and the elderly
- Publishing copies of the final plan
- Holding a community event to launch the plan
Applications for Community Planning grants will only be accepted from one of the following:
- Parish or Town Councils
- Not-for-profit groups that are leading a community plan in their area of benefit. These applications must be supported by endorsement from the parish / town council (or Winchester Town Forum in the case of communities within the town area).
- Organisations / groups must be able to demonstrate that they are seeking the views and wishes of all residents within their area of interest.
This funding stream is not intended to support projects that emerge as priorities from the community planning process. These projects can (if eligible) secure funding from other Winchester City Council grant schemes.
Applicants will receive written notification of the decision on their application within six weeks of the closing date.
