The Community Chest Scheme

This scheme was launched in April 2004 and aims to make small grants more accessible to local voluntary and community groups.

Grants of up to £500 are available for one-off pieces of expenditure if projects or activities meet the priorities under the following five headings:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Safer and Stronger Communities
  • Economic Prosperity
  • High Quality Environment
  • Inclusive Society

Your organisation needs to be a not-for-profit voluntary organisation, community group or a registered charity running activities or projects that benefit the residents of the Winchester District.

Priority will be given to projects which specifically:

(i) Include children and young people, the elderly, disabled groups and minority groups.

(ii) Address the needs of rural communities, and in particular Wickham and Knowle.

(iii) Target the town areas of Highcliffe, Stanmore, Winnall or Weeke.

(iv) Support the five legacy themes of Winchester's 2012 Framework "Live Your Dream". These projects - which are inspired by the 2012 Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and Cultural Olympiad - will have a lasting positive impact on the District, particularly for young or older people. The themes, all of which support the Council's corporate priorities below, are:

  • through sport
  • in your neighbourhood
  • through the arts or local history
  • by making the District a greener place
  • at work

Some of the groups and projects previously supported:

  • £500 was awarded to a new support group for sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
  • A grant to Footsteps enabled a multi-cultural event to promote the different cultures that are represented in Winchester.
  • A playgroup received £310 towards the cost of storage facilities.
  • Funding enabled the launch of a wheelchair basketball club.
  • Prime Theatre was awarded £500 to enable this theatre group to take entertainment into day centres and similar establishments for seniors in Winchester.
  • Several twinning events were supported during the year, Wickham Twinning Association received a grant of £220 for an event involving Villers-Sur-Mer. and £120 was awarded to the Winchester Tourist Guides towards an exchange with Laon.
